Christopher McDougall Interview

An Interview With Chris McDougall from Olly Hermon-Taylor on Vimeo.

Video watching time = 21 mins 29 secs

Last week, Chris McDougall was in town promoting the release of the paperback edition of Born To Run.  I had the privilege of meeting up with him in Hyde Park in London and filming a short interview and barefoot running demonstration.

I read the hardback edition of Born To Run last year and count it as one of the best books I’ve ever read.  It is a truly powerful book, packed with adventure, excitement, larger than life characters and fascinating evidence as to why we were born to run.  From the moment I unwrapped the Amazon package, I was completely enthralled and couldn’t put it down until I’d finished it two days later (yes, I’m a slow reader who likes to savour every word).  This is testament to how good a book it is, especially as I was not remotely interested in running at the time.  Born To Run really changed the way I think and feel about running and started my journey towards barefoot running.

Born To Run, Paperback

As soon as I had my meeting with Chris booked, I started reading Born To Run for the second time.  If anything, I enjoyed it more this time around and if you haven’t read it, then I can’t recommend it highly enough. Even if you don’t like running, you’ll love the book and find yourself itching to get out and hit the trail.

I’d like to say a huge thank you to Chris McDougall for giving up his valuable time during a hectic week in the UK and for writing such an amazing and inspirational book.  He struck me as a very intelligent, highly articulate man who is passionate about running and wants to empower other people to find the natural runner in them.  I hope you enjoy the interview as much as I did when I filmed it and apologies for the poor audio in places and the background drone of the city.

Thanks also to Anna-Marie at Profile Books for lining up the interview and to the The Serpentine Bar & Kitchen in Hyde Park for letting us film on their back terrace.  If you get the chance to drop in for a coffee mid-run, it is a very cool place.

  • Hi Simon, thanks for your comment and I’m glad you liked the video. We had an amazing morning in Hyde Park with Chris and I’m really glad I had the chance to meet him. Definitely an interesting character and someone I could listen to for a long time. All the best, Olly

  • Nice video Olly. He’s an interesting character isn’t he? Nice to hear him talk about some of the stories in the book. Thanks for posting this.

  • [...] Christopher McDougall Interview [OllyHermanTaylor] – I agree with Olly that Born to Run is a great book, if only because it’s inspiring and makes running seem fun/awesome/badass and I honestly thing it would encourage a lot of non-runners to lead a healthier lifestyle if they gave it a read. The primary reason why I think this book should be mandatory reading for high school students! [...]
